Editorial- Homemade Wild Persimmon Cake; Made, Styled, and Photographed by Peyton Olivia at The Barn Loft Studio
October is my favorite month. I actually plan to get married in October this year! There’s just something about the warm coolness in the air, the smell of the leaves decaying, the color palette of the wilderness, and the bittersweet goodbye we say to everything that grew for months before. October also has a handful of fruits and flowers that are still in their prime, like permissions. I have a few persimmon trees near my home and just before the end of October, they were perfect enough to make a cake. With every baked good I make I like to style it up for a photoshoot, just before it’s all gone and nothing but crumbs.
For this photo shoot, I set up in The Barn Loft Studio, near the barn door. It was about 3:00 or 4:00pm and the natural light creeping into the studio absolutely beautiful. I used my trusty little wooden table, covered it in linen, and started to design. I placed a slice of cake on a plate and sprinkled it in powdered sugar. Alongside the cake, I displayed a vase of dried grass strands, a small bowl of fresh persimmons, and a purple glass of red wine.
The vase, plate, bowl, fork, and glass are all vintage, collected by sister and myself. The extra persimmons came from the trees near my home, and the cake was made from scratch, by me. This entire set up was created by me, actually! I love to style. To photograph. To create. So many people in my life have told me to “stick to one thing and master it”. I get it, I do, but I just can’t. I have so many artistic outlets and they work hand in hand together. I believe we must use our skills and our abilities to our advantage and not ignore them.
